Reflective Pigments
Dazzlingly bright, our Reflective pigments are truly luminous. If you want to be seen, this is the product for you . . .
Made from tiny particles of solid soda-lime glass, this product only comes to life when there is a direct source of light on it.
You have likely seen this material in action many times, but on a much larger scale: on motorways where lanes are separated by ‘cats eyes’. What’s more, up close (very, very close) Reflective pigments appear like tiny glass bubbles! The particle sizes for aluminium coated glass microbeads varies between 55 and 75µm. White microbeads have a particle size between 45-55µm.
Whilst reflective pigments are compatible with water (aqueous) bases, it is also reassuring to know that solvents will not damage this product. Do bear in mind it is best to mix this pigment with clear mediums. SFXC reflective pigments (except for silver) can be mixed with water based mediums. For example, our Glitter binder has been produced in such a way that it can be combined with most substrates. On the other hand, it's gentle enough so it won’t diminish the reflective properties of pigments to which it is added. Ideally, combine 10-20% of pigment with our Glitter Binder.
Historically (over a century in fact), glass microbeads were used to create a basic coating on projection screens in cinemas. This was done to increase their brightness when viewed, allowing a richer and more immersive experience for film goers.
Nowadays, microspheres are used extensively as safety features in built up areas and on clothing. Just to name a few examples, this includes: high-visibility jackets worn by emergency crew or personnel on building sites, on ambulances and other critical response vehicles. SFXC Silver Reflective pigment is made with aluminium coated microbeads. Grey in colour, they're the key component in the coating used on high visibility vests and fabrics.
Glass microbeads’ unique chemistry means there is an abundance of space within its molecule structure. So, this pigment is perfect in lightweight building materials such as foam concrete, and is ideal for manufacturing products like adhesives, epoxy glues and coatings. Its applications traverse widely; from the medical and scientific fields in research and in devices like microscopes, to electronic displays and many consumer products. In addition, it offers plenty of educational opportunities for all ages.
